This post is intended for the U.S. market. Rules may vary by state or country. Check out our limits page for more information on transaction limits by country.

Main Points

  • Transactions below $960 do not require ID, only a name, date of birth, and a mobile phone number.

  • Transactions exceeding $960 require additional identification.

Buying Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies at a Bitcoin ATM is the easiest way to convert your cash to crypto safely and fast. To ensure you get your Bitcoin as quickly as possible, you must come prepared to the Bitcoin ATM. If you have read our guide on How to Use a Bitcoin ATM, you will know that you need your name, date of birth, mobile number, cash, and a crypto wallet to use a CoinFlip ATM. But, depending on the size of your transaction, you may be required to submit additional identification. This article breaks down everything you need to know about Bitcoin ATM ID requirements.

Do you need identification to use a Bitcoin ATM?

Yes and no. CoinFlip breaks down transaction limits into 3 tiers, all requiring different amounts of identifying information: Tier 1 $20-$960, Tier 2 $960-$2,995, Tier 3 $2,995-$19,000 - daily.

  • $20-$960 - For Bitcoin ATM transactions below $960, you only need to enter your name, date of birth, and mobile phone number.

  • $960-$2,995 - For transactions between $960 and $2,995, you must register as a tier 2 customer. You can do this at the Bitcoin ATM or online. To register, you must submit your name and mobile phone number in addition to a government-issued photo ID. Our third-party verification system, Veriff, will process your credentials.

  • $2,995-$19,000 - For transactions between $2,995 and $19,000, you must share your name, mobile number, government-issued photo ID, submit to Veriff, plus enter your social security number. To make transactions within this range, you will first need to call CoinFlip's 24/7 customer support line at (877) 757-2646 before completing your transaction.

What types of ID does a Bitcoin ATM accept?

Are you looking to buy between $960 and $2,995 worth of Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency? You will be required to become a tier 2 CoinFlip user, which means submitting a government-issued photo ID. Below, find a list of acceptable government-issued IDs:

  • Passport Card (will require follow-up call)

  • Employment Authorization Card (cannot surpass tier 2)
