If you're just getting started with cryptocurrency, figuring out which digital wallet to use can be just as confusing as trying to wrap your head around how bitcoin works. Fortunately, with the proper guidance, choosing the right crypto wallet isn't so tricky (nor is understanding bitcoin).

Not many digital wallets cater to beginners, but among the most user-friendly options is the BRD wallet. What is BRD, and what makes it so user-friendly? What are the pros and cons of using the BRD wallet? How well does it work with a Bitcoin ATM? Find the answers to these questions and more in this review of the BRD mobile wallet.

What is BRD Wallet?

BRD, formerly known as Bread Wallet, was founded in 2015 by the Swiss company Breadwinner AG. BRD is a non-custodial mobile wallet that allows you to have complete control over your crypto. BRD provides the software necessary to store your crypto safely, but remembering and protecting your private keys and passwords is your responsibility. BRD is available for download on iOS and Android and has a simple and easy-to-navigate interface.

Initial Thoughts

Finding and downloading the BRD wallet from the app store is easy, and the best part is that it is totally free. To get started, you will have to create a six-digit PIN in addition to writing down your unique recovery seed phrases. It is essential to keep both your PIN and recovery seeds stored offline in a secure place because this is the only way to access or restore your BRD wallet.

BRD automatically adds a Bitcoin wallet and an Ethereum wallet to your home screen, in addition to a wallet for BRD Token, the wallet's native cryptocurrency. Holding BRD Tokens can grant you varying levels of rewards on the app but is not required. Adding additional wallets to BTC, ETH, and BRD is easy - simply select Manage Wallets --> +Add Wallets.

BRD Wallet Pros

  • Free

  • Easy To Navigate

  • Secure

  • iOS and Android Supported

BRD wallet is totally free to download and use, making it the perfect choice for beginners who are just getting started and aren't ready to spend money on hardware wallets.

Easy To Navigate

BRD keeps your cryptocurrency portfolio nicely organized on the home screen while also displaying your total portfolio balance in the top right-hand corner of the screen. BRD makes it easy to stay up to date with some of your favorite cryptocurrencies. Historical data and price charts are built right into the app. You can easily access this information by clicking on each of your individual cryptocurrency wallets from the home screen.

BRD Wallet's menu is also straightforward - making it easy to change your security settings, access support, and update your preferences in the app.

While mobile wallets are inherently not as secure as hardware wallets that store your cryptocurrency offline, BRD wallets are exceptionally secure. BRD has never been hacked! The only way for anyone to ever access your BRD wallet is you somehow shared your private recovery seed phrases or PIN. As long as you make sure that your phone is safe and your recovery phrases are written down and stored in a secure, accessible location, then you can feel confident that your wallet will not be compromised.

Some people even use BRD as a hardware wallet and download it on an old phone that is not connected to the internet. If you are looking for maximum security but do not have money to spend on a hardware wallet like the Trezor One but have an old smartphone you no longer use, then BRD may be an excellent option for you.

Plus, BRD does not require you to set up an account or share any personally identifying information. This increases the security as your name, email address, address, and phone number are never stored in any system. However, if you decide to buy and sell cryptocurrency through the BRD app, you will have to share additional information to fulfill anti-money laundering KYC requirements.

iOS and Android Supported

BRD Wallet is highly accessible - anyone with a smartphone can download and use it.

BRD Wallet Cons

  • Limited Cryptocurrency Selection

  • Customer Support By Phone Requires BRD Holdings

Limited Cryptocurrency Selection

BRD Wallet's most significant drawback, in my opinion, is that it does not support all of the cryptocurrencies offered by CoinFlip. BRD supports Bitcoin and Ethereum and all ERC-20 tokens that follow the Ethereum blockchain standard like Binance Coin, USD Coin, and Chainlink.

The BRD wallet is not compatible with Litecoin, Dogecoin, Stellar Lumens, or Dash. This incompatibility means that if you hold any of these coins and want to keep your crypto in one place, then the BRD wallet will not suit your needs.

Customer Support by Phone Requires BRD Holdings

If you have questions regarding your BRD wallet, you can check their extensive support page or email them at [email protected] BRD limits its access to customer support by phone to people who hold 2,500+ BRD Tokens, currently worth about $875. BRD essentially puts a price tag on on-call customer support, which could be a problem for users that find navigating technology difficult and require increased support.

Using BRD With CoinFlip

BRD is the most straightforward wallet to use with a CoinFlip ATM. BRD Wallet has a built-in CoinFlip ATM locator. To access the map:

  • Head to the menu tab and click on "Crypto ATM Map" at the bottom of the list.

  • Type your location in the search bar up top to see your nearest CoinFlip ATM.

  • Click on your location of choice to find more details, including address, hours of operation, and a unique CoinFlip discount code exclusive to BRD Wallet users.

Once you've arrived at the CoinFlip ATM, you can easily access your wallet's QR code through the BRD app by clicking on the cryptocurrency you would like to purchase and selecting "receive" at the bottom of the screen. Your wallet's public bitcoin address and QR code will appear, ready to be scanned by the CoinFlip machine.

One hitch to using BRD with a CoinFlip ATM, as I mentioned above, is that you will not be able to purchase some of the cryptocurrencies offered by CoinFlip.

Final Thoughts

I have personally been using BRD wallet for about five months. I am happy with the experience, except that I can't keep my entire cryptocurrency collection in one place. Beyond being incredibly easy to use, BRD's biggest perk is that it provides an exclusive discount code for all purchases at a CoinFlip ATM. With BRD, you can also buy, sell, and trade cryptocurrency in the app, but the fees associated are not always the lowest on the market.

Overall, I highly recommend using the BRD wallet - especially if you are just getting started with cryptocurrency.
